We partner with a local Kenyan organisation called Transform Communities Initiative (TCI) to provide emergency food aid to the most vulnerable families affected by severe poverty and drought, across Turkana - Northern Kenya.

LOCAL GRASSROOTS PARTNERSHIPS

Since 2019 Heartbeat Africa has worked in partnership with our local partner Transform Communities Initiative (TCI). Together we are committed to providing life-saving emergency food aid to remote desert communities and the most vulnerable families.

The challenges faced in Turkana

Turkana is an arid and semi-arid region located in north-west Kenya. Persistent droughts make cultivating the land extremely difficult, and these are becoming more frequent due to climate change. The majority of the population are nomadic pastoralists / herdsmen who often relocate in search of the most productive land, taking their livestock with them. The livestock are key to the survival of these communities however natural water sources are drying up and pastureland is diminishing.

Food insecurity

Turkana county malnutrition levels remain very high with malnourished children being more likely to contract diseases because of reduced immunity. Turkana’s food insecurity is directly linked with the worsening drought and extreme climate of this region making farming / agriculture very challenging.
