A STORY OF GRACE, MENTORSHIP AND SECOND CHANCES

Losing Everything:

A Childhood Marked by Grief

My name is Samuel Otieno Owino. I was born in Siaya County, Kenya, in a small village called Yogo, in Alego Constituency. I was born into a family of five, with two brothers and two sisters, and I was the second-born after an older sister. Unfortunately, I lost both of my parents in the year 2010. My Mum died of postpartum complications after giving birth to my youngest brother. A few months later, my dad also passed away, leaving us orphans and with no one to take care of us. I was just nine years old. Losing both of my parents at that tender age was a defining moment - one filled with grief, uncertainty, and fear. Like many children in similar circumstances, I could have easily slipped through the cracks of society. My life could have just become another sad statistic - but God had another plan.

Divine Protection

"A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is a God in his holy dwelling." Psalms 68:5

Lifeline Through Heartbeat Africa UK

In late 2011, I was taken in by Amani Village of Hope Children's Home. There, I became a beneficiary of Heartbeat Africa, a Christian Charity that has been helping vulnerable children across East Africa. Thanks to their support, I received not just food, shelter and education, but most importantly love. I joined Mindhine Primary School in class 4 and completed my primary education 4 years later. Having passed my exam, I was admitted to Sawagongo Boys High School, where I successfully completed my secondary education.

Through the support of Heartbeat Africa, I was allowed to build a future I once thought was impossible.

A Life-Changing Encounter with Chris Saunders

In the year 2012, during one of his regular visits, I met Chris Saunders – a man who would become one of the greatest influences in my life. Through his mentorship and care, I was introduced to the Christian faith and eventually gave my life to Christ and was baptized in 2020. Since our first encounter, Chris has been more than just a mentor and a role model; he has been a spiritual father and a father figure, walking with me faithfully through every stage and step of my growth - emotionally, spiritually and academically. How amazing this has been! Sometimes I reflect on how far we've come, and I can only thank God. Surely, He had a purpose for bringing Chris into my life.

A Call to Serve:

From Student to Nursing Officer

After High School, I faced uncertainty about my future, since I had left the orphanage. But by the grace of God, Chris, together with Heartbeat Africa, continued to support me fully. With their help, I enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme at Daystar University. I had all my university needs met through their support, and I graduated in November 2024. I followed the calling that had been growing in my heart to care for others, and nursing couldn't have been a better option. Right now, I am proudly serving my internship at Chuka County Referral Hospital. Every patient I care for reminds me of the compassion I received when I needed it most. Nursing is more than a job to me - it's a mission and a way of giving back.

God's Faithful Plan

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose" -Romans 8:28

Future Full of Purpose

Heartbeat Africa, together with Chris Saunders, didn't just sponsor me - they restored my dignity! They gave me hope, a path, and a reason to keep going.

Today I serve as a living testimony that God's love, expressed through ordinary people, can transform lives!

God's Promise

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "Plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11

My Mission Forward

My dream is to one day mentor others the way I have been mentored. I want to stand in the gap for other children who are hurting, just like I once was, and to be a vessel of healing and encouragement.

A Shared Testimony
